All Roads Lead To Dacusville, Even From Canada

Around these parts you don't hear sayings such as...

"Oh Me Nerves"
"I don't know if I'm Hit or Stunned"
"Lard Tunderin, Bye"
"How's she going Bye?"
"Holy Ole Bald Headed Moses"
"Good Dear Good"
"J'eet yet? No Djou? No T'wirly"

Canada  Money
However, if you visited Canada, this is what you would hear.  Also in Canada,  their dollar coin is called a Loonie and they use a two dollar coin called a Toonie.  They are taxed 15% on everything which is high to us but, they do have great health insurance.  They pay $5.50 for gas, and they drink hot tea; no Starbucks and no iced tea.  Just recently they changed from paper bills to plastic bills.  Don't wash and dry your money in your pant's pockets; it might just melt.  It's almost deer season here, try hunting 1600 lb. moose in Canada. Do you enjoy varieties of food? Here, we have ten varieties of peanut butter, well there they may only have 2 or 3.  If you enjoy shopping for clothes, you need to have plenty of Loonie and Toonie because in Canada clothes are very expensive. Things may be different in Canada, but Jimmy Shelton found something there that he loved, and brought her back to Dacusville.

Jimmy Shelton is a hometown native from our community, he served in the Navy.  While in the Navy, he met his wife Ann from Nova Scotia, Canada. Ann was part of the local Army Reserves.  In 1956 Ann moved from Canada to our little town of Dacusville.  Ann comes from a large family with 4 brothers and 4 sisters.  Three of the four sisters followed Ann from Canada; Hazel aka "Gabby", Peggy, and Lorraine aka "The Baby".  Hazel and Lorraine have moved back to Canada, they live there with their families and with Jean; their oldest sister. Peggy and Ann stayed here in Dacusville, and we are a blessed community to have them and their families to be a part of us.

This family doesn't let distance keep them from one another, on every special occasion they get together. Hazel and Lorraine were down the past two weeks to celebrate Ann's grandson, Jay Hitt's wedding. Jean couldn't make the trip because of health reasons.  While they were here, they traveled to the "Isle of Palms" in Charleston.  They shopped, shopped, and shopped.  They loved going to Wendy's to eat, they went to the Jockey Lot, and visited with family members.

"We are 5 sisters
5 sisters are we
I love each of you, and
I know you love me.
We're not always together,
life sometimes keeps us apart.
But we're never separated,
we are in each others heart."

This poem was written by Hazel, it was given to each sister along with this plaque.

What can we learn from these sisters?

The distance from their home in Canada to Dacusville is a 36 hour drive, and many times they have traveled it.  They make every effort to be with one another, to continue sharing life together no matter the distance between them, because they love one another. You can be in a room with them for just a few minutes and you will experience the love they have for each other.

The distance from Canada to Dacusville is a long one, but they travel it because of who they get to see at the end of the road.

Love For Another...

Jesus walked a Road, the Via Dolorosa "Way of Sorrows" because of His Love for Us.  It was a Road that you would not have wanted to travel, but he did it because at the end of it, was You and Me.

"Down the Via Dolorosa
Called the Way of Suffering
Like a Lamb came the Messiah, Christ The King
But He chose to walk that Road out of His love for You and Me
Down the Via Dolorosa, All the way to Calvary"

Eyes to See

My Mom Only Had One Eye

Author Unknown

My mom only had one eye.  I hated her...She was such an embarrassment.  She cooked for students and teachers to support the family.

There was this one day during elementary school where my mom came to say hello to me.  I was so embarrassed.

How could she do this to me? I ignored her, threw her a hateful look and ran out. The next day at school one of my classmates said, "EEEE, your mom only has one eye!"

I wanted to bury myself. I also wanted my mom to just disappear.  I confronted her that day and said, "If you're only gonna make me a laughing stock, why don't you just die?"

My mom did not respond...I didn't even stop to think for a second about what I had said, because I was full of anger. I was oblivious to her feelings.

I wanted out of the house, and have nothing to do with her.  So I studied real hard, got a chance to go abroad to study.

Then, I got married.  I bought a house of my own.  I had kids of my own.  I was happy with my life, my kids and the comforts.  Then one day, my Mother came to visit me.  She hadn't seen me in years and she didn't even meet her grandchildren.

When she stood by the door, my children laughed at her, and I yelled at her for coming over uninvited. I screamed at her, "How dare you come to my house and scare my children! GET OUT OF HERE!
NOW!!!"

And to this, my mother quietly answered, "Oh, I'm sorry.  I may have gotten the wrong address."
-and she disappeared out of sight.

One day, a letter regarding a school reunion came to my house.  So I lied to my wife that I was going
on a business trip.  After the reunion, I went to the old shack just out of curiosity.

My neighbors said that she died.  I did not share a single tear.  They handed me a letter that she wanted me to have.

"My dearest son,

I think of you all the time.  I'm sorry that I came to your house and scared your children.

I was so glad when I heard you were coming for the reunion.  But I may not be able to even get out of bed to see you.  I'm sorry that I was a constant embarrassment to you when you were growing up.

You see........when you were very little, you got into an accident, and lost your eye.  As a mother, I couldn't stand watching you having to grow up with one eye.  So I gave you mine.

I was so proud of my son who was seeing a whole new world for me, in my place, with that eye.

With all my love to you,

Your mother."

This son was blind, he may have had two eyes but he couldn't see.  "...For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart." -1 Samuel 16:7

Do you have 20/20 vision, are you seeing clearly?

The human eye is a remarkable body part, God designed it amazingly so we could see this beautiful world he created.

Did you know:

  • All babies are color blind when they are born.
  • Babies' eyes do not produce tears until the baby is approximately six to eight weeks old.
  • Our eyes are always the same size from birth, but our nose and ears never stop growing.
  • Our body has some natural protection for our eyes. Our eyelashes help to keep dirt out of our eyes. Our eyebrows are made to keep sweat from running into our eyes.
  • It's impossible to sneeze with your eyes open.
  • When you blink, you shut your eyes for 0.3 seconds.  That's a total of 30 minutes each day.
  • You blink about 12 times every minute.
  • Seeing is such a big part of everyday life that it requires about half of the brain to get involved.
  • Out of all the muscles in your body, the muscles that control your eyes are the most active.
  • The most common injury caused by cosmetics to the eye is by a mascara wand.
  • Eyes heal quickly. With proper care, it only takes about 48 hours for the eye to repair a corneal scratch.
  • Around the world, an adult goes blind every five seconds and a child goes blind every minute.

The "Dacusville Lion's Club" care about our eyes....

"Since the International Convention of 1920, when Helen Keller challenged the Lions to become 'Knights of the Blind in the battle against darkness', sight conservation has been a high priority of Lion's service."

"In 1993, the efforts of Lions culminated in the Lions 'Sight First' Campaign,  a fundraising drive to raise funds to restore the sight of the 32,000,000 people in the world who have curable blindness and to prevent blindness from occurring to an equal number who might lose their sight in the next 25 years.  The campaign, which raised more than $145 million, will accomplish those goals around the world."

The "Dacusville Lion's Club" collects donated eyeglasses, and they help provide glasses and eye exams for the ones that qualify.

Dacusville Cowboy Church

Have you ever invited someone to church and get this response, "I don't have anything to wear."

"To the weak I became weak, to win the weak.  I have become all things to all men so that by all possible means I might save some." - 1 Corinthians 9:22

Why Cowboy Church?

If your family was in a burning building, you would do all you could to get them out. Philip Wilds, "Cowboy Church" planter stated, "If we had the chance to experience 5 minutes in hell, we would do what we could to get them to church."

Philip Wilds with his wife Nylene
Philip and Nylene are from Campobello, SC.  They are affiliated with the South Carolina Baptist Convention, and they plant Cowboy Churches. The first church that they planted was 5 years ago in N.C. Philip said that planting churches are not easy because the devil is going to do what he can to stop it from happening.  Philip said that the Lord told him to go to Dacusville to plant a church, and that is why they are here.

Philip was saved in his early 30's, and he has a burning desire to see the lost get saved.  Philip didn't grow up in church. Sunday was his only day off and he said, "I'm taking my horse to the woods, and I can just meet God there."  Philip's wife, Nylene earnestly prayed for 10 years for Philip and God answered her prayers.  Philip said be careful what you pray because now they are in church every night of the week.

Greg Lambert

Greg Lambert led the music, he is originally from Eastern Kentucky. To hear Greg sing click the link below: https://www.facebook.com/video/video.php?v=208221599298948&oid=319755984708038

I attended the second "Cowboy Church" meeting which was held in the old Dacusville Elementary Schools's gym.  I felt very comfortable in my blue jeans, flip flops, and t-shirt. I was greeted with big smiles and warm welcomes.  I recognized some of our members from the community.  Philip started out with prayer and then the music was led by Greg Lambert as he sung and  played his guitar.

Greg Lambert playing guitar

Philip spoke on how to build a "Cowboy Church" in our area.  He said that everyone doesn't feel comfortable in traditional churches.  He shared a story of a man that was 59 years old and under house arrest.  The man came to know Christ through "Cowboy Church".  He said that the man didn't feel good about going to the traditional church in his community because everyone knows about him and wouldn't welcome him.  Philip loves traditional church, he attends his every Sunday.  However, he knows that not everyone feels welcome there.  He said it is hard to get the lost to go to a traditional church, but they will attend a "Cowboy Church" because they feel comfortable, loved, and welcomed.

"Cowboy Church" meets on days other than Sundays because it is not a church that draws members from other churches.  It is a ministry team that works together to win the lost.  Philip is working to build this team, he desires to utilize people from other churches because it takes a mature christian to disciple new believers. A meeting is being held on September 10th, 7:00 pm, at 230 Ambler Rd, Marietta; right above Edens Horse Farm for anyone interested in being a part of this ministry.

Philip Wilds
Philip shared that 3.2 Million people have no affiliation with church in South Carolina; the Bible Belt.  He said, "We first have to build relationships.  Faith in Christ doesn't come quickly, they have to feel like they belong and are wanted. 78% of people come to church because someone invited them."  Philip said they have to "belong before they believe."

If one soul is saved, it is worth it all!

We all have lost loved ones, would we do everything we could to reach them?

This is why "Cowboy Church"

*The church now meets in the building formerly known as the"Dacusville Ice Cream Parlor" beside the Texaco on Earl's Bridge Rd. in Dacusville on Tuesday nights at 7:00 pm.  If you need more information contact Philip Wilds at 864-561-6999, or click this link:  https://www.facebook.com/pages/Dacusville-Cowboy-Church/412728715510609
